Survive A Staircase

You wait until they cease their cries, silk curve
of spine, wet drips on thighs, together
pressed in dinner dress. Have you the nerve
to dishonor his request? Tear tether
to him navigating stairs — mortal sin
you are aware. Why you, undressing, sob,
let down your hair, in frilled nightgown, listen,
deep breaths, prepare to turn a fluted knob,
tiptoe. Eyelids near shuttered as you, slow,
shuffle towards a banister, to feign
somnambulism should some soul show —
a maid or doctor in the night. A vain
attempt, derived of fright, in dead of night
to survive a staircase if all goes right.
